The Step Up For Students Tax Credit Scholarship Program is an innovative initiative that allows any company who pays Florida Corporate Income Tax or Insurance Premium Tax to redirect a portion of those taxes to provide educational scholarships for low-income children. Qualifying parents can use these scholarships to send their child to the K-12 public or private school that best meets their child's learning needs. Corporations receive a dollar-for-dollar tax credit with the state, therefore allowing corporations to redirect funds that they must already pay to the state of Florida to educate at-risk students. For banks, there is an added benefit in participating as examiners at bank CRA regulatory agencies have approved dollars transferred to fund scholarships through Step Up For Students to qualify for positive consideration under the CRA investment test. In the past nine years, the corporate community has pledged over $1.7 billion to this initiative and we currently serve nearly 70,000 students annually. Step Up For Students has maintained its position with a small but special group of nonprofits by receiving Charity Navigator's seventh consecutive four-star rating for its ability to efficiently manage and grow its finances.
